Seasonal chants
On this page, you will be able to access chants for the Ordinary of the Mass. When referring to the parts of the Mass, the parts labeled as the "Ordinary" refer to the prayers that remain the same from Mass to Mass, as opposed to the "Propers", which change from Mass to Mass depending upon the particular feast or celebration. The chants for the Ordinary include the Kyrie ("Lord, Have Mercy"), the Gloria ("Glory to God in the highest..."), the Credo ("I believe in one God..."), the Sanctus ("Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts..."), and the Agnus Dei ("Lamb of God"). During Advent and Lent, the Gloria is omitted. The Credo is mainly said on Sundays and Solemnities.
There are certain musical settings of the Ordinary in Gregorian chant that are traditionally assigned to certain seasons or feasts. Much like one would notice the different liturgical colors used during certain seasons (e.g. violet for Advent and Lent, green for Ordinary Time, red for Pentecost or feasts of martyrs, etc.), the assignment of traditional chant settings to the different seasons serve as a sort of musical signpost that remind us where we are in the liturgical season and/or what kind of feast we are celebrating.
